The Roman flamens, or peculiar priests of Mars. They were twelve in number, and were instituted by Numa to guard the ancile, or sacred shield of Mars. They used on solemn occasions to proceed through the city dancing, whence they derived their name (from satire, to dance). [s. 1089]
