Conjoined deafne and dumbne , especially when congenital deafne prevents the learning to speak. In 1890, 41,283 persons were reported as deaf and dumb in U. S. The education of deaf-mutes was first proved po ible by Cardan IMG:content-1103.png:[merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][merged small] (1501-76) and put into practice in Spain by Pedro Ponce (1520-84), but in England the first school was not opened till 1760 and France followed five years later. Now Great Britain has 48 schools, U. S. 61, Germany 96, France 70, Italy 35, and there are more than 100 in other countries.
