Lempriere, JOHN

D.D., ab. 1760-1824. English author of a Cla ical Dictionary. 1788-92, long in general use, and of a Dict. of Biography, 1808. Lemurs ( Otolicnus galago ). have but one young to a birth. Pro pith ecus leaps on his hind legs, and can clear 30 ft. at a bound. The woolly lemur has 36 teeth and a pair of pectoral mammæ; it has a tail half as long as the body, is gregarious, quadrupedal and diurnal. It feeds on fruit buds, eggs, birds, insects, and takes pleasure in roaring loudly at evening. One or two young are born at a time. Galago of Africa has a long tarsus, with very large eyes, and jumps like a jerboa. The Nycticebinæ includes the slow lemurs of the East Indies. See LORIS.
