Fuller says they first entered England in 1252: “and had (if not their first) their finest habitation at St. Peter’s the Poor, London, thence probably taking the denomination of poverty. They were good disputants; on which account they are remembered still at Oxford by an act performed by candidates for Mastership, called Keeping of Aug us tines .” This exercise, with other ancient forms, was abolished by the University Statute towards the beginning of the present century.— Jebb.
