Vespa maculata. Insect of the Wasp family, building a nest of material gathered from leaves and wood resembling paper of a gray color. The name is applied to several varieties. Its sting is severe and painful. See VESPIDÆ. Horn Fly. Hæmatobia serrata . Smaller than the house fly, and annoying to cattle, sucking their blood while collecting about the bases of the horns and other places where they are not easily warded off. While sucking, they inject an irritating fluid, which makes the blood flow more freely. To keep the flies off, the hair is rubbed daily with fish oil, 2 qts., crude carbolic acid, 3 oz., and oil of tar, 1 oz. Hornpipe. Old English dance original
