Maj -gen. and adj. to Emperor Nicholas; succeeded father as director of Imperial Chapel 1837-61; excellent vlt., organized succe ful string quartet; made collection of chants of Greek ritual; composed 4 operas, vln concerto, caprices for vln., and church music but especially the Ru ian national hymn God Save the Czar written 1833, retired 1867.
