Heating by Electricity

—Electric heating, though too costly for general purposes, may be economically employed in cooking, welding in the electric furnace, for warming cars in electric railways, and in a number of minor situations. The advantages of electric heating are freedom from odor, dust, noise and fumes, ease of installation and opera= tion, portability, safety, economy of space, ete. Two of the most important commercial uses of electric heat are in the reduction of substances in the electric furnace, and in the uniting of metal in welding. The heat of the electric arc has also been used in cutting structural steel and sheet piling with great saving of time. aa
