(Zool.) See LEPIDOPUS. Garʼter-snake, n. ( Zool.) The name of two species of harmle striped snakes, of the Coluber fam., common in the U. States. Gar ter, (Order of the.) ( Her .) One of the most celebrated and ancient of all the orders of knighthood in Europe, instituted by Edward III of England. The origin of this decoration is ascribed to a trifling accident, which occurred at a ball at which the king and paddock.
