[Hottentot karusa =hard.) Phys. & Botan. Geog.: The middle terrace in point of elevation in the South African tableland, constituting part of the Cape Region. It is very rich in vegetation, which, however, is mostly confined to one month-August. There are Ericacem, Proteacese, Euphorbiaceæ, Liliaceæ, Iridaceae, the Rhinoceros bush ( Stoebe rhinocerot is ) everywhere on the land, and Prionium, a rush, impeding the water courses.
