STINT

In Coal Mines, a measure of work used under ground, 2 yards long and 1 broad, which each miner clears before he removes to another place, and which is proved by a boy appointed for the purpose, who is colloquially called " the judge." STIPEND (Lat. stipendium), signified originally the pay of soldiers. In a legal sense it is applied to the salary or allowance given to some person for transacting the busine of another; but in Scotland the term is almost exclusively confined to the provision made by law for the established clergy.
