DAY, Samuel Stearns

[s. 223] : Born Ontario, Canada, May 13, 1808; graduated Hamilton Literary DARLING, David: Born 1790; sent by London Mi ionary Society to the South Seas in 1816. Stationed at Eimeo and Tahiti, making various mi ionary tours from Bunaania. In 1834 he went to Marques as to commence a mi ion on those islands, returning the next year to Tahiti. He a isted in translating the Scriptures into the Marques an language. Returning from a visit to England, 1852, he made his home in Tahiti till and Theological Institute; sailed as a mi ionary of the ABMU to India, September 20, 1835. He was stationed first at Vizagapatam, then at In Madras he Chica cole, and in 1837 at Madras. spent three years preaching in Telugu and English, and organized an English church, of which he was the pastor. Having made several tours into the Telugu country, he fixed upon Nellore as the most suitable place for a mi ion, and in Deacone es 1840 removed thither with his family. Mr. Day was the founder of the Telugu Mi ion. Amid many discouragements and obstacles he continued to labor, in firm faith that the Gospel would triumph in that heathen land. By reason of failing health he spent three years (1845-1848) in the tJnited States and returned to Nellore. But in 1853 he was compelled to return to America and after years of physical suffering he died at Homer, N. Y., September 17, 1871. 224
