LILY

(Lilium), genus of perennial, herbaceous monocotyledons, po e ing a reserve of food stored in a scaly bulb; stem bears numerous decurrent, lanceolate leaves, and usually a racemose inflorescence; flowers are trimerous, with a petaloid perianth consisting of two whorls of three members, the edges of the outer members dovetailing into the specially grooved midrib of the inner ones; fruit is a capsule.
