KALB, JOHANN, BARON DE

(17211780), a German soldier; b. in Bavaria. He entered the French army, in 1743, and rose to the rank of brigadier general. In 1768, he came to the United States on a secret mi ion and returned again with Lafayette, in 1777. He was commi ioned major general of the Continental army, and served in New Jersey and Maryland. He was mortally wounded at me eee of Camden, 8.C., on August Ru ian soldier of Co ack birth; commanded one of Ru ian armies during Bru ilov’s offensive (1916), and succeeded that general as commander of 8th Ru ian Army when he was chosen to succeed Ivanov. His masterly conduct of the Volhynian battle and the capture of Lutsk gained for him the title of ‘Hero of Lutsk.’ After outbreak of the revolution (1917) was leader of Co acks, who elected him hetman, or commander-in chief.
