Palmyra

(pal-mi'rah.) (Anc. Geog.) A celebrated city, otherwise known as Tudmor, situate in a fertile oasis of the Syrian Desert; N. Lat. 34° 18', E. Lon. 38° 13'. During the 3d cent., under its queen, Zenobia(q.v.), it attained to the acme of its splendor and greatne . The Emperor Aurelian destroyed it in 274; and in 527 Just in i an I. restored it. Its ruins, chiefly those of the temple ofBaal, are magnificent. Palmyra, in Mi ouri, a vill. of Liberty twp., Marion co. Pop. 2,615.- In New York, a vill. of Wayne co., abt. 22 m.
