ARISTOLOCHIA

A genus of exogenous plants, usually having ARISTO TEL I AN PHILOSOPHY. twining stems and one-sided bent, yellow or purple variegated flowers, the odour of which is often very offensive They are reputed to be powerful stimulants and aromatics. One species, but not a twining one, is occasionally met with wild in England (A. clem at it is, common birth wort): a few are natives of the South of Europe, but the principal part of the genus is tropical. ARISTO LOCH I ACE^. The natural order of which Aristolochia is the type. Asarum (see Asarabacca) is the only other common genus a ociated with Aristolochia; but there are several tropical forms. The wood of this order is remarkable for growing without forming concentric zones, although undoubtedly exogenous. [s. 99]
