WOOD

FERNANDO (1812-1881), American politician. Born in Philadelphia June 4, 1812; died in Washington, February 14, 1881; educated in New York, he entered the shipping busine , and was elected to Congre as a Democrat in 1840. In 1850 he retired from busine and was Tammany Hall candidate for mayor of New York. He was elected to the office in 1854, and again in 1856. Owing to di ensions his followers broke away from Tammany and established Mozart Hall as 2 rival organization. As their candidate for mayor he lost in 1858, but was elected in 1866. In the Civil War he proposed that New York should secede and become an independent city. Member of Congre 1863-1865 and 1867 and 1877.
