De Soto, FERNANDO

1496-1542. Spanish officer with Pizarro in Peru; appointed governor of Cuba and Florida 1537. He wandered with his companions four years through Florida and as far as the Mi i ippi River, which he is said to have discovered; died as the expedition was returning, and was buried in the Mi i ippi.
