pl. [Mod. Lat. melandry (a); Lat. fem. pl. adj. suff. -idæ, -adæ.] Entom.: A family of Coleoptera, section Heteromera, and the sub-section Trachelia of West wood. They inhabit wood, the majority remaining con cealed under the bark of trees. The species, which are not numerous, inhabit the north temperate zone, both in the Old and New World. měl-an-ěll-ite, s. [MELANITE.] Min.: A black gelatinous substance remaining after the separation of rochlederite from mel an chyme by di olving in alcohol. Analysis gave: Carbon, 67-14; hydrogen, 4.79; oxygen, 28:07=100. Rochleder regards it as an acid related to ulmic acid (q. v.).
