Lever

A mechanical power; in machinery usually consisting of a metal bar, used to effect pre ure at some part of its length, receiving a force at a second part, and turning at a third part on a stedfast fulcrum. In indirect-acting-engines of paddle-steamers, the work performed • by the piston is transmitted by a lever to the connecting-rod, in vertical engines of screw-steamers, levers are employed to give action to the various steam-pumps.
