Tank

(tăngk.) [From Sansk. ta naga, a weir.] (Naut.) A large sheet-iron reservoir or cistern for the safe-keeping of freshwater in a ship's hold.-(Mach.) In locomotive-engines, that part of the attaching tender which contains the water for the use of the boiler. A tank engine is one which, by carrying its own water and fuel, has no need for an accompanying tender. [s. 878]
