Statistics

(sta-tis'tiks.) [From Lat. status, condition.] A science which exhibits the conditions of a country, with regard to its extent, population, industry, wealth, and power. It includes the natural and acquired capabilities of productions; the quantity and value of the various articles of utility and convenience which it po e es, and annually produces; the number and cla es of its inhabitants, with their respective incomes; with the institutions for the government, improvement,defence, and maintenance of the population. It has much in common with geography and politics, and includes what is termed political arithmetic. [s. 853]
