name used for the inhabitants of Flanders (q.v.). Many of them settled in England at yarious times, especially in the eastern counties. They brought with them the weaving industry, and there are evidences of their activities at Dedham and elsewhere in E ex, and the adjacent counties. In the 12th century Henry I settled some of them in Pembrokes hire and that neighbourhood, but they were disliked and often attacked by the Welsh. To-day Belgium is inhabited by Flemings, who speak Dutch and inhabit Flanders and other parts in the north-west of the country, and Walloons who speak French and live in the south-east.
