An iron plate sliding backwards and forwards in a groove, and so arranged as to enlarge or contract, and occasionally close the chimneys of furnaces, steam boilers, <fcc, so as to increase or diminish the draught of air through the fire, and consequently regulate the intensity of the combustion.
