LAZARE NICOLAS MARGUERITE, (kar'no,) a French geometer and statesman, B. 1753; he was one of the members of the convention which voted the death of Louis XVI. On the establishment of the Directory, he became one of its 5 members till 1797, when he was exiled on the charge of being a royalist. On Napoleon becoming First Consul, he recalled C. and made him minister of war. D. 1823. C. was author of La Géométrie de Position, and other able scientific works. [s. 147] Car'ob -tree. (Bot.)
