BEINGS

A Dictionary of Islam · 1885 · p. 39
According to Muḥammadan belief, there are three different species of created intelligent beings: (1) Angels ( Malāʾikah ), who are said to be created of light; (2) Genii ( Jinn ), who are created of fire; (3) Mankind ( Insān ), created of earth. These intelligent beings are called Ẕawū ʾl-ʿUqūl , or “Rational beings,” whilst “ unintelligent beings” are called G͟hair Ẕawū ʾl-ʿUqūl . Ḥayawāni-Nāt̤iq is also a term used for rational beings (who can speak ), and Ḥayawāni-ʿAjam for all irrational creatures. [ JINN .]
