(as.) [ L. asinus.] (Zool.) A well-known animal of the gen. Equus (E. asinus), remarkable for its hardihood and length of life. It is said to be a descendant of the wild a , inhabiting the mountainous deserts of Tartary, ., celebrated in history for the fiery activity of its disposition, and the fleetne of its course (Fig. 50). Its characteristics are a long head, long cars, a round body covered with a short and coarse fur, of a pale dun color, with a streak of black running down its back and acro the shoulders, and a tail not hairy all the way, as in a horse, but only at the end.
