Susa

(soosah,) or SOOSA, a seaport of N. Africa, regency of Tunis, 40 m. S. of Hammamet. Pop. 10,000. Susa. [Shushan, in Daniel, Esther, ., derived by some from sho shan, a lily. ] (Anc. Geog.) An ancient city of Persia, probably the modern Sus or Shusn, in Lat. 32° 10' N., and Lon. 48° 26′ E., situated between the Chapses or Eulæus (Ulai in Daniel) and the Shapur, anciently the capital of Susiana (the Elam of Scripture, mod. Khuzistan). It is supposed to have existed as early as B. c. 600. It was the capital of Susiana, q. v., and was taken, with all its treasures, by Alexander III., B.c. 331. The seat of government was transferred from Babylon to S. B. c. 330. An tigon us took S. B. c. 315. [s. 870]
