YEOMAN

(From the Anglo-Saxon gemen; Germ. gemeln, common.) Camden ranks yeomen as the next cla to the gentlemen; and calls them "ingenuos." The name seems to have been generally appropriated in the middle ages to small freeholders. In the king's household, the yeomen of the different departments have a middle place between the sergeant and the groom. Yeoman. A seaman appointed to certain duties, as to attend to the store-rooms.
