Town on w. shore of Red Sea, near the border Ma owa. of Aby in i a; held by Turks 1557-1866; occupied by Italy 1885, and valued for strategic reasons. M. is surrounded by islets, which make navigation difficult. Dysentery and fever are prevalent. Pop. ab. 16,000.
