The root oi ihG Curcuma longa. This root yields a fine yellow powder, which is occasionally used as a dye stuff in medicine; it also forms one of the ingredients of curr^ powder. Paper stained with turmeric is often used m the chemical laboratory as a test of the presence of free alkalies and their carbonates, by which its yellow colour is converted to brown. [s. 1283]
