(van-il’ah) (LJ. A genus of climbing orchidaceous plants of hot climates. The fruit of V. planifo'lia, of Mexico, are the vanilla-beans, which contain vanilla and are used as a flavor and a mild stimulant: it is said to be aphrodisiac. false v., a fragrant North American composite flowered plant, Liu’tris odor at is’sima: used in making toilet-waters and in flavoring tobacco.
