Alosa

(Zool.) A gen. of fishes of the Clupeid a or herring family. They are distinguished from the herring by having the upper jaw notched in the middle, and by the roof of the mouth and the tongue, the former of which is destitute of teeth. The A. communis, or com Fig. 92.-ALOSA COMMUNIS. (Common Shad.) mon shad, reaches a length of two or three feet, and its flesh is highly esteemed. The gen. A. contains the shad, alewife, mendahen, and autumnal herring. A'lost, or AALST, a town of Belgium, in Flanders, on the Dender, 15 m. from Bru els.
