Ger., Asphodel een. A family (order) of monocotyledonous plants, in the systems of Ju ieu, Brown, and others, comprising Aleiris, Sanseviera, Aloe, Anther i cum, Asphodel us, Phalangium, Hyacinth us, Scilla, Ornithogalum, Allium, and other genera. It includes caulescent or acaulescent herbs with 6-parted regular perianth, deciduous or withering; 6 stamens inserted on the calyx with introrse bilocular anthers; a free trilocular ovary with the loculi opposite the outer divisions of the perianth, and each loculus containing several (rarely 2 or 1) biseriate, generally anatropous ovules; a single terminal, more or le elongated style with entire or 3-cleft stigma; and a capsular, trilocular, loculicidal fruit containing in each loculus 1 to many seeds which have a membranaceous, rarely crustaceous, testa and horny or fleshy albumen. It was divided by Endlicher into the Hyacintheæ, An the riceæ, and As parageæ; by Kunth into Hyacintheæ, Allieæ, and Anther i cee, to which others add a fourth tribe, the Tulipeæ; by Reichenbach into the Scilleæ, He me roc all i dieæ, and Anther i cee, and in another cla ification into the Tullbaghiew, Scilleæ, and_Dracæneæ; and by others into the Aloineæ, He me roc all ideæ, Tullbaghieæ, Hyacinthee, Scilleæ, Eriospermeæ, An the riceæ, Aphyllantheæ, and Tulipeæ. By most of the later writers it is joined to the Liliaceæ, being regarded as a tribe of the latter. It then is usually employed in a more restricted sense, comprising those liliaceous herbs in which the rhizome is quite short, the stem rarely bulbous, the leaves are not fleshy, the inflorescence is simple, rarely branching, the segments of the perianth are separate an tent, the anthers are introrsel dehiscent, and the fruit is a capsule [Bentham and Hooker]. It divided into the subtribes Euasphodelee, Chorogaleæ, Bowieæ, An the riceæ, and Dianelleæ. Engler divides the A. into the subtribes Asphodel inæ, the Anther i cine (in part, the An the riceæ and the Euasphodeleæ of Bentham and Hooker), the Chlorogalinæ (Bentham and Hooker's Chlorogaleæ), the Odontosteminæ, the Eriospermine (Bentham and Hooker’s Bowie), the Xeronemieæ (comprising two genera referred by Bentham and Hooker to the Euasphodelee and the An the riceæ), and the Dianelline (Bentham and Hooker's Dianellæ). {B, 42, 176, 188; Engler (B, 245).]
