Halidon Hill

In s.e. Scotland, near Berwick. Here the English defeated the Scots with heavy lo July 19, 1333. Halifax. Borough of Yorkshire, 43 m.s.w. of York. It has important woolen manufactures. Pop., 1891, 82,864. Wool shops-Halifax. Hall in the 14th Century. The hall was the upper story, whether the building consisted of one or more, and was immediately under the roof, the ceiling being of timberwork open to the ridge, or, in some few instances, vaulted in masonry. There was commonly a raised dais at one end, often in a bay lighted by its own window. Perhaps the finest examples remaining of the Mediæval hall are in England, as may be seen in Westminster Hall, the ruins of Kenilworth, and the older colleges of Oxford and Cambridge. The open timber roof in churches of the Gothic revival is derived rather from the secular halls than from ecclesiastical examples of the Middle Ages.
