Gyroscope

(ji'ros-kōp.) [From Gr. gyros, and skopeo, I inspect.] (Ast.) An instrument invented by M. Foucault for proving the rotation of the earth about its axis. Its principle depends upon the powerful resistance which a rapidly revolving heavy body opposes to a change of position in its axis of rotation. A disc of metal, with a heavy circumference suspended in a particular way, is set in rapid rotation in a given plane. If the instrument be carefully constructed, the motion may be kept up long enough to show phenomena which can only be explained by a uming the rotation of the earth. Gyulai, FRANZ, COUNT, (joo'li,) an Austrian field-marshal, B. in Pesth, 1799, succeeded Radetzky in the chief command in Italy, 1857, and was defeated by the Franco Sard in i an army at Magenta in 1859. In the French it still obtains as a character, but is seldom audibly used in pronunciation. In Spanish it frequently takes the place of the Latin f, as in hum oso, for fumosus, smoky; and in Italian it is never found. In English words,h is sometimes mute, as in honor, humble, honest; also when allied with g, as in light, sought, eight. In which, what, where, whither, and some other words in which it is preceded by w, it is sounded before it, as mo ich, hwal, hw ere, . Generally speaking, the letter h occupies in the English tongue a peculiarly anomalous orthoepic position; the lower orders of people either altogether ignoring its locality of application, or transposing the same with reference to a succeeding vowel. The Romans employed it asa numeral to expre 200, and with ad ash over, thus (H), for 200,000.- (Mus.)
