[Lat.,=a thong, from habeo =to hold.] Surg.: A bandage for the purpose of keeping the opposite sides of wounds together. hab-e-när-i-a, s . [From Lat. habena =a thong or strap, which the lip sometimes resembles ( Hooker & Arnott). Etym. doubtful ( Sir Joseph Hooker ).] Bot.: Butterfly orchid; a genus of orchids, tribe Ophrése, family Gymnadenidæ. It resembles orchids in its general character, but has the glands of the pollen ma es free, distant, and exposed. A hundred species are known.
