Resin

(sometimes written ROSIN,) (rěz'in.) [From L. resina.] (Chem.) A name given to many vegetable substances which are allied physically, although they may differ chemically. They are insoluble in water. and generally soluble in alcohol and e ential oils. They soften or melt with heat, do not crystallize, are of different shades of yellow or brown, and are of various degrees of transparency. They are of considerable commercial value for the manufacture of soap, varnish, benzoic acid, . The following are some of the principal resins: - Benzoin, dragon's blood, Peru balsam, storax, Tolu balsam, gum ammonia cum, amine, asafœtid a, copaiba, copal, da mma, elemi, galbanum, gamboge, guaiacum, lac, mastic, myrrh, olibanum, sandarac, scammony, turpentine. The following are fo il resins: -Amber, asphalt, fo il caoutchouc, peat resins, pyroretin, ret in asphalt, tasman nite. [s. 764]
