Embryo

(èm'bre-o.) [FromGr. en for em, and bryo, I swell to bursting.] (Physiol.) The first rudiments of the animal germinated in the womb, before it develops into a fætus.- (Bot.) A fleshy body occupying the interior of a seed, and constituting the rudiments of the future plant. The E. is divided into 3 parts, corresponding to the root, stem, and leaves of the perfect plant, termed respectively the radicle, the plumule, and the cotyledon or cotyledons. [s. 328]
