town, Rhine land, Germany (49° 44’ N., 6° 38’ E.), on Moselle; has manufactures of linen, cottons, woolens, leather, stained gla , etc.; iron foundries, machinery, dyeing; claims to be oldest town in Germany; interesting Rom. remains, such as amphitheatre, Porta Nigra, brick basilica, 4th cent., now Prot. chureh, ruins of Roman palace and baths, Igel column, cathedral, 11th to 13th century; contains ‘Holy Coat’; cap. of the Celtic Trevirt, then Roman August a Trevirorum, became residence of Roman emperors, 3rd to 4th century; archbishopric established in 814; as electors, archbishops po e ed great temporal power, 14th to 18th century; annexed by France, 1801; Pru ian since 1814. During the World War it was bombed by the Fr. Air Force, Aug. 21, 1918. Pop. 54,800.
