large genus of tropical shrubby plants, order Malvaceae, cultivated in greenhouses as Ind. mallows, Menite kings; iemeioe forts, tombs built from Ist to 30th dynasty, 5500-500 z.c.; declined from Ptolemaic period; ruins of Seti I.’s Great Temple, tombs, and forts still remain; place sacred to Osiris, whose cult began here in 12th dynasty.
