Sir Alexander ( son of Thomas Banner man of Aberdeen, wine merchant who d. Jany. 1820 aged 77 ). b. Aberdeen 7 Oct. 1788, shipowner, merchant and banker there; M.P. for Aberdeen 1832–47; dean of faculty in Marischal college Aberdeen 1837; a comr. of Green wich hospital 1841; governor of Prince Edward island 3 Feb. 1851, of the Bahamas 8 May 1854 and of Newfoundland 9 Feb. 1857 to 1863; knighted by the Queen at Bucking ham palace 3 Feb. 1851. d.
