n. Gla2nd. Gr., aSyv. Lat., glandula. Fr., glande. Ger., Druse. It., ghiandola, glandola. Sp., glandula. 1. In.botany, an organ or cell serving to elaborate and contain a secretion. [B, 19, 34, 121, 123(<x, 24).] 2. In the animal organism, an organ having for its function the separation or elaboration of some particular substance or substances from the blood, either (as in excretion) for mere elimination or (as in secretion) to serve a physiological purpose within the organism or, as in the case of the testicles, the mammary g's, and poison-g's, a special purpose in another organism. A g. may be either a simple cellular sac or crypt or a collection of such structures together with a connective-ti ue framework, nerves, blood-ve els, ducts, etc., inclosed in a capsule. [L, 206.] 3. An organ which, while it has (like the testicles and the ovaries) or has not the functions mentioned, is or has been supposed to exert a physiological action upon the blood pa ing through it, or to take part in the formation of the blood, or in some way to affect the character of the organism. Such g's are the thymus, the thyreoid, and the spleen. 4. An organ having the general appearance of a g., but not a umed to have glandular functions (e. g., the pineal g.). 5. Acce ory lacrymal g's. Lat., glandulce lacrimales acce ories. See G's of Krause. Acce ory lactiferous g's. See Montgomery's g's. Acce ory parotid g. Lat., glandula parotis acce or i a, (glandula) soda parotid is. Fr., glande acce oire de la parotide. Ger., Nebenspeicheldriise. A small collection of glandular ti ue close to the anterior margin of the ma eter muscle, opening into the parotid duct and secreting saliva. [L, 332.] Acce ory suprarenal g's. Lat., glandulce supra ren a les acce orial. Ger., Nebennebennieren. Small bodies occasionally found connected with the suprarenal capsules and closely resembling them in structure. [L. 332.] Acce ory thyreoid g's. Lat., glandulce thyreoideoe acce ories. Ger., Neb ens child drusen. Small collections of glandular ti ue similar to the thyreoid g. and termed glandula} thyreoidece acce ories infer i ores, later a les, poster i ores, and super i ore.i, according to their position relative to the thyreoid g. [L, 332.] Acino-tubular g. Ger., tnbulo-acinose Druse. A g. intermediate in structure between a racemose and a tubular g. [C.] Acinous g. Lat., glandula acinosa. Ger., acinose Druse. See Racemose g. Acinous tar so-conjunctival g's. See Meibomian g's. Adventitious g. An enlarged lymphatic g. [L, 102.J Aggregate g's, Aggregated g's. Lat., the palpebral and sclerotic portions. Interpreted as pathological conditions. [J, 67, 140.] Agm mated g's (of the small intestine). Lat., glandulce agminatce (Peyeri). See Peyer's fir's. Albumin-g. Ger., Albumindriise, Eiwei driise, Dotter stock. In certain invertebrates (e.g., the Cestoda) the g. which secretes the albuminous covering of the ovum. [L.] Albuminous g's.
