Auricular Confession

R. C. and Oriental usage of confe ing at least all mortal sins into the ear of a priest as part of the sacrament of penance. Authorized by Leo ab. 450, it was made obligatory by the 4th Later an Council, 1215, and declared by the Council of Trent (1545-63) indispensable to salvation.
