(ni-tro-deks’trds). used like nitroglycerin. nitro-erythrol (ni-tro-er’ith-rol). Erythrol nitrate: used like nitroglycerin, but slower and more lasting in its action. nitro form (ni’tro-form). Trinitrobenzene; an inflammable, crystalline substance, CH(NO,);. nitrogen (ni’tro-jen) [Gr. νέτρον niter + yerray to generate]. colorle , gaseous element found free in the air; symbol, N; specific gravity, 0.9713; atomic weight, 14.01. It constitutes part of the atmosphere, forming about four-fifths of common air. Chemically, it is almost inert, but forms by combination nitric acid and ammonia. It is a gas unfitted to support respiration; not a poison, but proving fatal if breathed alone, because of the want of oxygen. alloxuric n., nitrogen in the form of alloxur-bases. filtrate n. See rest n. wD. monoxid, a colorle gas, N20, or nitrous oxid, having a sweetish taste and a pleasant odor. It causes a condition of temrary asphyxiation and unconsciousne when inhaled, and is administered to produce this condition for the performance of minor operations. Called also laughing-gas. ς n., free nitrogen from the air which enters into plant and animal growth. n. pentoxid, a crystalline compound, N,O,, or nitric an hydrid, which combines with water to form nitric acid. Ὦ. oxid, n. tetroxid, a poisonous volatile liquid, Ni, giving off brownish, irritant fumes. rest n., the non-protein nitrogen ‘of the body; the body nitrogen existing in some other form than in the protein molecule. Called also filtrate π. nitrogenization (ni’’tro-jen-iz-a’shun). The act of impregnating with nitrogen. nitrogenous (ni-troj’en-us). Containing nitrogen. nitro glucose (ni-tro-glu’k5s). A compound derived from glucose by the action of nitric and sulphuric acids. It is given as an arterial stimulant. nitroglycerin (ni-tro-glis’er-in). A colorle or yellowish, oily liquid, C,H,N,0,, formed by the action of nitric and sulphuric acids on glycerin, and known also as glonoin. It is poisonous and highly explosive. Physiologically, it acts as a vasodilator: used principally in angina pectoris and asthma. Dose, 9}9-sh gr. (0.000335-0.0013 gm.); of tincture, 4-10 min. (0. 033-0.606 c.c.); of spirit (a 1 per cent. solution), 1-2 min. (0.065-0.13 c.c.). nitro levulose (ni-tro-lev’u-lés). Levulose nitrate: used like nitroglycerin. nitro mannitol (ni-tro-man’it-ol). trate: used like nitroglycerin. nitrometer (ni-trom’et-er) [nilrogen + Gr. μέτρον measure]. An apparatus for measuring the quantity of nitrogen given off in a reaction. nitro mon as (ni-tro-mo’nas). Same as misrosomo- Pyroxylin, or Dextrose nitrate: Mannitol ni- nas.
