Commissioner

One who has a commi ion or warrant from proper authority to perform some office or execute some busine ; as, a boundary commi ioner. -An officer of state who has charge and control of a department of the public service; as, a commi ioner of taxes, a commi ioner of patents, . Commi ioners of Highways. Officers having certain powers and duties concerning the highways within the limits of their jurisdiction. In some of the States they are county officers, and their jurisdiction is co-extensive with the county. In others, as in New York, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin, they are town or township officers. They have power to establish, repair, or vacate highways, and it is their duty to cause them to be kept in good order. Commi ioner's Creek, in Georgia, traverses Wilkinson co., into the Oconee River, about 10 m. E. of Irwinton.
