Sassafras

{sasf -a-fras) [Sp., from saxifraga, from saxum, rock \frangere, to break]. The S. var i i folium, a tree of the order Laurinese. The root-bark (Sa afras, U. S. P., Sa afras radix, B. P.) is employed as an aromatic stimulant. The pith (Sa afras medulla, U. S. P.) yields a mucilage (Mucilago sa afras medullse, U. S. P.) that is used as an application to inflamed eyes, and as a demulcent drink in inflammation of the mucous membranes and kidneys. 567
