WASHINGTON, BOOKER TALIA

FERRO (1856-1915), an American eduecationalist. Of African descent; born a slave at Hale’s Ford, Virginia. With great determination he secured an_education at the Hampton Industrial Institute, Virginia, and studied later at Way land Seminary. Was elected in 1881 to the presidency of the Tuskegee Institute, a negro organization for higher and profe ional education. His works finclude: The Story of the Negro, 1909; Up from Slavery, 1901, and its sequel Working with the Hands, 1904. 1832), an American jurist, b. in West more land County, Va. He was a nephew of George Washington and inherited his papers and library. After studying law he began to ractice, was a member of the Virginia ouse of Delegates and of the Virginia Ratifying Convention, in 1788. In 1798 he became a ociate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, a position he held for thirty-one years. He wrote A Report of the Court of Appeals of Virginia.
