Oneidas

a tribe of American Indians formerly of the Iroquois confcderation, from an early period lived in New York State. They were generally favorable to the English, but in the Revolution supported the colonists. For this their villages were ravaged and their property destroved, By a treaty in 1794, the government made compensation for their lo es. In 1785 and 1788 they ceded lands to the State of New York. Later, some went to Canada, and in 1821 a large number acquired lands on Green Bay. 53
