Death of a portion of the living organism, followed by putrefaction or desiccation; due to its direct chemical or mechanical injury, to impairment of its supply of blood, or to certain impaired conditions of the general health. Formerly the term was applied more particularly to a state in which the affected part was not yet actually dead, complete death of a part being called sphacelus.
