(név’-in), (1) Ethelbert (Wood bridge), Edge worth, Penn., Nov. 25, 1862—New Haven, Conn., Feb. 17, 1901; prominent American composer; pupil of von der Heide and E. Giinther (pf.) at Pittsburgh; of von Bohme (voice), at Dresden, 1877-78; of Pearce (N. Y.), B. J. Lang and Stephen A. Emery (Boston); von Biilow, Klindworth, and K. Bial, Berlin; lived in Florence, Venice, Paris, and New York as teacher and composer; after t90a at Sewickley, near Pittsburgh, Pa.; c. a pf.-suite; song-cycles “Jn Arcady,”’ and a posthumous “The Quest of Heart's Desire’; highly artistic piano pieces and many song albums of well deserved popularity. His songs are genuinely lyrical, with an exuberance of musical pa ion, and accompaniments full of colour, individuality and novelty. (2) Arthur, b. Vine Acre, Edge worth, Pa., April 17, 1871; bro. of above; from 1891 studied with Goetschius, Boston, then at Berlin with Humperdinck, Boise and Klindworth; spent the summers of 1903 and 1904 among the Black feet Indians in Montana, collecting material for his Indian opera ‘‘ Poza,” libretto by Randolph Hartley (prod. in concert form by the Pittsburgh Orch. and as an opera at the Royal Opera, Berlin); c. also r-act opera “Twilight”; orch. suites “Lorna Doone” (prod. by Karl Muck in Berlin), and ‘Love Dreams’’ (Pittsburgh Orch.); also songs; 1915-20, taught Univ. of Kansas; later res. in Memphis, Tenn.
